The difference Between Plasma and Serum is very much distinct. Both Plasma and Serum are the liquid portion of the blood.

Blood : 

Blood is made up of two things, its a mixture of cell and plasma. Blood regulates the body temperature along with the pH level by maintaining a deep balance between acids and bases.

Blood = Cell + Plasma

Blood is a special connective tissue consist of :

  1. Fluid Matrix
  2. Plasma
  3. Formed elements

Blood is a mixture of tissues that travels in the body distributing oxygen and nutrients along with metabolic wastes. while the cell is a cellular part and plasma is a liquid part and inside the cell, we can find out RBC (Red Blood Cells) and WBC (White Blood Cells).

Plasma and Serum are very important ingredients of blood and are used during blood tests to get human blood groups. If we remove fibrinogen from plasma we get the serum and this is the basic difference between plasma and serum. 

Serum = Plasma – Fibrinogen 

Plasma = Water + Salt + Fibrionogen 

On the basis of weight, size and density plasma and serum can be separated from the blood. once the blood gets clot, serum can be removed as liquid, whereas we get plasma after treating blood with various compounds.

Plasma : 

Plasma is 55% of blood which is a straw-colored viscous plasma different types of blood cells exists and it’s a medium of blood, many compounds suspended in plasma along with red blood cells and white blood cells. 

It’s very much helpful for balancing blood pressure, it contains 

  1. Water :- 90 – 92%
  2. Proteins:- 6 – 8%
  3. Fibrinogen 
  4. Globulins and Albumins
  5. Minerals
  6. Glucose
  7. Amino Acids
  8. Lipids
  9. And many more compounds

Blood Protein :

  1. Fibrinogens: for clotting or coagulating of blood. 
  2. Globulins: involved in the defense mechanism of the body because of which plasma helps in regulating body temperature.
  3. Albumins: Helps in osmotic balance

Factors for coagulating or clotting of blood are present in an inactive form in the plasma.

Serum :

           Serum = Plasma – Clotting Factors


The serum is the undiluted part of blood and does not have clotting factors, since it is formed after blood coagulation. Many diseases can be diagnosed with the help of serum, diseases like blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol can be identified

Vitamin K :

Vitamin K is a dependent clotting factor present in both serum and plasma (2,7,9,10), so generally, we can channelize that clotting factor can be utilized in the formation and rest we can see the serum. 

The compound which is directly involved in blood clotting is called Prothrombin (clotting factor II) is a vitamin K-dependent protein in plasma. Vitamin K is from the family of compounds and has the chemical structure of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone. In a normal human being concentration level of phylloquinone in plasma, range from 0.29 to 2.64 nmol/L. 

People lower in this range are mostly suffer from Vitamin K deficiency, mostly because of plasma phylloquinone concentrations unable to take from the daily available diet of a person.

As we can see in the table, plasma is a yellowish fluid of blood while serum is 

The liquid part of blood after clot formation.

This plasma is fluid with clotting factor but the serum is fluid without clotting 

The factor can be called fibrinogen which is removed from the serum. 

In the case of plasma, it is obtained from a centrifuge which is known as whole blood and in 

case of serum is obtained after clot formation. 

For the plasma we definitely require anticoagulant but in the case of serum there is 

no requirement of anticoagulant, that the plain white red in color.

Plasma volume is 55% of blood but the serum is always less in comparison to plasma 

because it is the extract of our blood.

In the case of plasma, it can be immediately obtained after blood collection while

serum we have to wait for clot and that’s why we need some 15 to 30 minutes to

obtain our serum.
